Robotics from Simulation to a Tested Robot

Build computational thinking, sensor interpretation and state-based behaviour before integrating low-voltage electronics. Fifteen two-hour sessions are grouped into six modules. Learners can complete a simulation route; the physical build is a separate supervised endorsement.

Objectives

  • - Classify input, controller and actuator and write an unambiguous movement algorithm.
  • - Build and debug a block program using event, sequence, repetition and a condition.
  • - Calibrate a threshold, model differential drive and prioritise state transitions.
  • - Distinguish reactive avoidance from planning and compare versions with repeatable trials.
  • - Plan safe power and interpret LED, light and ultrasonic experiments.
  • - Integrate components in stages and defend a tested controller.

Prerequisites

Basic arithmetic and files. Suitable from about 12 with adult supervision and for older beginners. Block activities require no Python; the optional Python simulator requires PY or equivalent.

Recommended tools

What professionals use for this course, with a free or open-source option wherever there is one.

  • Block programming: loops, events, decisions.

  • Blocks or JavaScript for micro:bit and Arduino, with a simulator.

  • Google BlocklyOpen source

The block library behind many learning tools.

  • For advanced learners and trainers: building with Blockly.

  • Simulate an Arduino, its sensors and wiring online.

  • WokwiFree plan

Arduino and ESP32 simulator in the browser.

  • Arduino IDEOpen source

Write and upload the NightLight and DistanceRead sketches.

  • Thousands of documented projects for inspiration.

  • PlatformIOOpen source

A VS Code extension to go beyond the Arduino IDE.

    Alternative to Arduino IDE

  • ThonnyOpen source

A simple Python editor for beginners: it shows variables step by step.
